This is a combination memoir and biography of a genuine American hero who was universally respected among his peers and associates during a lifetime of military and political service to his country. "Solider" lays out a life which began as the son of Jamaican immigrants and was to lead into the highest levels of government during four presidential administrations. Perhaps his most important military contribution was the development of what came to be called the "Powell Doctrine" that called for the necessity of going into any military engagement with overwhelming force. Perhaps the most calamitous results of abandoning this doctrine by the Bush administration (and while Powell was serving as the American ambassador to the United Nations) resulting in the catastrophic American engagement in Iraq. Drawing upon interviews with both American and foreign sources, as well as with Colin Powell himself (and being given unprecedented access to Power's personal and professional papers), "Soldier" is an informed and informative presentation of an American icon who was both inspiring and fallible.
