The new `Developers Program' is targeted at companies that create plug-ins, and complementary technology or hardware products for Softimage(R) applications. The new program will allow third-party developers to take advantage of advanced customization and extensibility features of Softimage products, as well as co-marketing Co-marketing is a marketing practice where two companies cooperate with separate distribution channels, sometimes including profit sharing. The new Developers Program includes four levels of membership: Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The Basic level regroups shareware Software on the "honor system." The concept is that users try a product, and if they like it, they voluntarily pay a set registration fee or make a donation to the program's creator. There are tens of thousands of shareware programs; some fantastic, some awful.  and freeware Software that is distributed without charge and which may be redistributed without charge by its users. However, ownership is retained by the developer who may change future releases from freeware to a paid product (feeware). The Silver level is aimed at third-party developers who require minimal support. Silver level partners will receive email technical support, printed documentation and current shipping products with bi-annual updates.

The Gold level is for third-party developers who have products that can be seamlessly integrated within a Softimage(R) product using its software developer kit, SOFTIMAGE|SDK (Software Developer's Kit) See developer's toolkit and Windows SDK.

. All Gold partners receive software and toolkits, quarterly updates, pre-release product and technical and marketing support during the term of the contract. This level offers third-party product distribution and promotional development.

The Platinum level is for third-parties who want to fully integrate their tools within Softimage products and who want to benefit from the joint distribution of products. Softimage provides engineering, sales, distribution and marketing support for these tightly integrated third-party products. Platinum Partners will benefit from the highest level of priority treatment, via e-mail, phone and on-site support.

Softimage also announced that its software developer kit, SOFTIMAGE|SDK, has been expanded to include the SOFTIMAGE|XSI XSI - X/Open System Interface  Viewer SDK which provides developers with the tools to write plug-ins for the Viewer Plus, to plug .xsi file support into their own products, customize the file format, and support the reference previewing tools. The source code for .xsi file parsers is included, making it simple to support .xsi as a solution for any 3D media art pipeline.

The SOFTIMAGE|XSI Viewer is available free of charge and provides basic support for .xsi files. SOFTIMAGE|XSI ViewerPlus is a licensed product that supports plug-ins, thus enabling customers to add proprietary effects and middleware Software that functions as a conversion or translation layer. It is also a consolidator and integrator. Custom-programmed middleware solutions have been developed for decades to enable one application to communicate with another that either runs on a different platform or comes from a  companies to extend its functionality.
