The awards ceremony honored leaders in four categories--the public sector, development, media and marketing--for significant contributions to the architecture, engineering and construction community, and for helping to shape the future of New York City.

This year's honorees were: Amanda M. Burden, chair of the New York City Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

"The great accomplishments of these individuals are not only extremely impressive and admirable, but also encouraging and inspiring for everyone involved in professional services marketing," says David Koren, president of SMPS-NY. "I'm thrilled that we're able to recognize their achievements."

Ms. Burden is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners The American Institute of Certified Planners (or AICP) is the American Planning Association's professional institute. AICP certifies professionals in the United States in the field of Urban planning and assists planners in the areas of ethics, professional development, planning  (AICP AICP American Institute of Certified Planners

) and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  (AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture ). She received the Public Sector Award for her work with the Department of City Planning and the New York City Planning Commission, where she has led Mayor Bloomberg's economic development initiatives.

Ms. Burden has used her architectural knowledge to create comprehensive urban design master plans designed to prompt commercial and residential development throughout the city. She is also credited with initiating the rezoning plans to help provide new residential development in neighborhoods throughout the city, and has championed the preservation of the High Line.

Mr. Chakrabarti, also a member of the AIA, was honored with the Development Award for his leadership at the Related Companies, where he spearheads the redevelopment of New York's Farley post office. Under his direction, this 1.4 million-square-foot space will be transformed into a mixed-use intermodal transportation and retail hub, to be called Moynihan Station.

, were presented the Media Award for their work at Architectural Record--in particular; the three-part series they co-authored on marketing.

Ms. Kolleeny oversees the residential quarterly and will also be launching a green section for My House Magazine, where she serves as managing editor.

Mr. Linn is responsible for writing and editing stories that cover such architectural issues as building design, planning, architectural technology, computers, ethics, firm management and the business of architecture.

), was given the Special Public Service Award for her work in creating Canstruction, a national design/build competition that combats hunger.

Initially, the event was held only in New York City, but through Ms. Melillo's vision it has now grown to include 80 cities.

Ms. Stanley, also a member of the SDA, received the Marketing Achievement Award in recognition of her ability to customize marketing efforts to meet the needs of each geographic area and increase business in structures projects and services. She is also credited with expanding Weidlinger's exposure through the media, live presentations and marketing material.

The Marketing Champion Award went to Barbara Thayer, PE and RA, to honor her accomplishments at her firm, which provides architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, land surveying and planning services for infrastructure projects. She oversees the day-to-day operations of her growing $5 million firm, and actively participates in the procurement, design, review and development of projects.

Mr. McCann, a certified professional service marketer, received the Pinnacle Award in recognition of his 25 years in the A/E/C A/E/C Architect/Engineer/Contractor  community, 16 of which have been spent as a professional services marketer.

The Society for Marketing Professional Services is the premiere source of educational and networking opportunities for marketing professionals employed by firms serving the built and natural environment.

The New York Area Chapter, founded in 1984, serves marketing professionals who live or work in New York City, Northern New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester.

The chapter has more than 250 members from over 220 of the area's leading architectural, engineering and construction firms.
