The powerful hardware allows this multi-function network security appliance to protect up to 1000 computers without having to offload processor intensive tasks to external systems.

"Businesses need a high performance hardware platform to support the industry-leading Web and email content analysis and filtering that our UTM (Unified Threat Management) Refers to a stand-alone appliance or a software package that combines a firewall, antivirus, spam and content filtering as well as intrusion detection.  Web filtering makes relatively modest processor demands. For truly effective Web security it is necessary to examine the many items that actually comprise a web page - and that is processor-intensive. The SmoothGuard 1000-UTM incorporates our industry-leading Dynamic Content Analysis technology, anti-spam and anti-virus scanning for 1000 users. The Intel([R]) Core[TM] 2 Duo processor, coupled with the PCI Express([R]) bus and a Gigabyte of RAM makes this possible."

The new SmoothGuard 1000-UTM appliance includes:

* Firewall: Stateful packet inspection See stateful inspection.  with load balancing, layer 7 content analysis and intrusion detection

* VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  Gateway: Clientless Secure Remote Access for mobile users and site-to-site VPN connections

* Web Security: Content filtering, anti-virus, anti-spyware and browser exploit detection

* Email Security: Anti-spam, anti-virus and mail relay

In their Network Security and Content Security Report for Q3/2006, industry analysts Infonetics concluded; "Worldwide network security appliance and software sales were up 11% to $1.18 billion between the second and third quarters of 2006 - and are forecast to grow 39% between 2005 and 2009, when they will reach $5.48 billion." The report predicts that over the next two years firewall vendors will include anti-virus, anti-spam and other content security features within their products. With the SmoothGuard 1000-UTM, these "future capabilities" are already here.

The SmoothGuard 1000-UTM appliance supports all the features of Advanced Firewall, SmoothGuardian web security/content filtering module and SmoothZap email security/anti-spam module. Integration with Microsoft Active Directory[R], Novell eDirectory[TM] and other LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory.  based user authentication systems facilitates group based security policies and reporting. The SmoothGuard 1000-UTM is twice as powerful as competing appliances in the same price range starting at $5,000.
