Smiths Aerospace Opens Automated Refueling Test Facility.

LE BOURGET Le Bourget is a commune in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 10.6 km. (6.6 miles) from the center of Paris.

A very small part of Le Bourget airport lies on the territory of the commune of Le Bourget, which nonetheless gave its name to the airport.
, France -- Smiths Aerospace recently opened a fully automated refueling test facility at its Corona, California Corona is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 124,966; a 2004 special census put the fast-growing city's population at 144,274.  location. The facility is the most advanced of its kind and is capable of simultaneously testing the Wing Aerial Refueling Aerial refueling, also called Air refueling or in-flight refueling (IFR) or air-to-air refueling (AAR) or (in the UK) tanking. Note that AAR also stands for "After Action Review" (de-briefing) and in aviation, IFR also stands for  Pod (WARP) and centreline Hose Drum Unit (HDU HDU High Dependency Unit

). This new capability is being used to develop and qualify aerial refueling equipment for the Boeing KC-767 Tanker Transport programme and allows growth capacity for additional programmes simultaneously. The new test facility adds 20,000 square feet of dedicated testing space to the existing Smiths facility at 550 Monica Circle in Corona, California.

HDU and the WARPs on the KC-767A provides for three-point hose and drogue refueling of probe equipped receiver aircraft. Each WARP provides a self-powered integrated system while the HDU is integrated within the aircraft power systems. The HDU and WARPs represent a new generation of digitally controlled aerial refueling systems designed to provide increased reliability and enhanced maintainability.  systems offer improved operational performance, particularly in the use of a microprocessor based electronic control system to increase the response rate of the hose system.

Smiths also provides the aerial refueling control computers, boom actuation control system, electronic elevator feel computers, high-lift actuation, power distribution, mission control system, and the standby instrumentation system. Smiths total contract value on the KC-767 Tanker is worth more than $1 billion.

Smiths Aerospace is a leading transatlantic aerospace equipment and systems company, with more than 10,000 employees and $2 billion sales worldwide. Smiths Aerospace, a part of Smiths Group plc, holds key positions in the supply chains of all major military and civil aircraft, helicopter and engine manufacturers and is a world-leader in digital computing, electrical power, mechanical systems, engine components and customer services. www.smiths-aerospace.com
