Smithfield, district of the City of London, England. Beginning in the 12th cent., it was used for fairs, markets, jousts, and executions. During the reign of Queen Mary I (1553–58), Protestants were executed there. London's central meat market is in Smithfield.

 Foods Inc., Smithfield, Va., plans to merge two major pork processing plants in an effort to reduce costs. The company will combine the Smithfield Packing Co. and Gwaltney of Smithfield Ltd. businesses into one unit with annual sales of more than $2.5 billion. The merger will include elimination of an unspecified number of administrative positions, but sales forces of the two businesses will remain separate.
