In more than 100 classrooms across 20 states, teachers and Smith Barney Financial Advisors are prepared to teach a financial education curriculum to educate middle school students on the importance of financial literacy Financial literacy is the ability of individuals to make appropriate decisions in managing their personal finances. Raising levels of financial literacy is now a focus of government programmes in countries including[1] Australia, Japan, the United States and the UK.  and fiscal responsibility. The program runs from February February: see month.  13-15, 2007.

For the past nine years, Smith Barney has been helping to educate future investors through its Take Your Parents to School Day[R] Program, which is a component of the firm's Young Investors Initiative. In the three-session program, teachers will use Smith Barney's proprietary curriculum to discuss the basic fundamentals of investing and how these skills will enable the students to become financially responsible adults. On the final day of the program, February 15, 2007, a Smith Barney Financial Advisor will bring the financial markets to life for both the students and their parents with the introduction of the National Stock Portfolio Contest.

The National Stock Portfolio Contest allows participating classroom teams to compete with schools across the country. Each class submits a hypothetical Hypothetical is an adjective, meaning of or pertaining to a hypothesis. See:

 portfolio consisting of five shares of stock selected from a list provided by the firm. During the 12-week contest, students from all participating schools can track their portfolio's performance online through the firm's Young Investors Network (SM) Web site at: www.younginvestorsnetwork.com.
