In fact, the radio is hardly larger than a, say, 5-year old mobile phone. The set is fully sealed which makes it waterproof as opposed to water resistant and the battery pops in and out from the bottom of the set in a manner reminiscent of battery-powered hand tools. Ergonomics and physical features (there are many more) are one thing, but usability is another, and this is where the new ITT product scores high. The Handheld Radio, as it is officially designated, is a frequency hopper. As ITT puts it, "it operates in any combination of clear, encrypted and single channel/frequency-hopping transmission modes". Developed on company funds, the Handheld Radio has, according to ITT, already attracted keen interest from a number of regions, notably the Middle East and Africa. The US armed forces seem to have suggested a repackaged solution to be embarked on drones where it could act as a radio relay. |
