RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 14, 1997--At the Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung Telecommunications America, Inc. (STA) introduced its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995.  market," said Mr. Jeong Han Kim, President, STA. "We are committed to servicing this market by providing users with highly reliable, fully-featured and user-friendly CDMA products," he concluded.

User-friendly features include a unique menu-driven interface for easy access to functions like messaging and memory. Other features include caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party. , call timer, voice privacy, call restriction, power save mode, last number redial In telecommunication, an automatic redial is a service feature that allows the user to dial, by depressing a single key or a few keys, the most recent telephone number dialed at that instrument.  (up to 10 numbers), auto-lock, memory storage up to 100 numbers, SMS-Short Message Service, a large 3 line display for twelve characters per line plus 2 lines of icons, and more.

Talk time is 2 hours using the standard battery and 5 hours with the extended battery. Stand-by time is 20 hours standard and 60 hours extended. Handset dimensions are 5.7" length by 2.1" width by 0.9" depth. The handset weighs only 6.7 ounces with the standard battery and 8.9 ounces with the extended battery.

Portability and ease-of-use are critical to user acceptance. Weighing less than 7 ounces, these ergonomically designed handsets are feature-rich. "Because it is pocket-sized and weighs so little, users will not think twice about carrying the handset. This, of course, means that the handset is more useful, which in turn increases call volume to the Service Provider," said Ken Cho, Product Manager, Wireless Terminals.

Samsung chose to develop CDMA technology as it provides high quality voice transmission and security, superior call capacity and reduced cross-channel interference in comparison to TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA).  technology. The main distribution strategy that Samsung is focusing on for this market is to partner with Carriers such as Sprint PCS, RBOCs, and Resellers who will offer their customers CDMA Cellular/PCS service. Retail channel development will evolve with the market.

Samsung's track record in providing CDMA solutions is extensive. In 1995, Samsung was selected by Shinsegi Telecom to provision the worlds largest commercial CDMA wireless communication service, due to its ability to deliver and support highly reliable equipment. In 1996, Samsung signed an agreement with Sprint PCS to deliver more than $600 million worth of its slimline, super-light CDMA PCS handsets.

The CDMA PCS and CDMA Cellular Handsets will be available for delivery 2nd quarter, 1997. These handsets will be offered to end users by CDMA Carriers. Each Carrier will define the price points and/or service sign-on promotional cost.
