Small Outline, Dual Readout Memory Modules (SO DIMMs) Meet Needs of Next Generation Notebooks, Sub notebooks, Printers.FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 27, 1995--Extending today's technology into the 21st century, memory-card maker Smart Modular Technologies Inc. (privately held) is introducing a new type of memory module designed to meet the needs of next-generation notebook and sub notebook computers, printers and portable test equipment. Known as a small-outline dual in-line memory module See DIMM. (storage) Dual In-line Memory Module - Small circuit boards carrying memory integrated circuits, with signal and power pins on both sides of the board, in contrast to single-in-line memory modules (SIMM). (SO DIMM SO DIMM Small-Outline, Dual-In-Line Memory ), the new device offers 32-bit-wide organizations in a small form-factor (2.35 x 1.0 x 0.140 inches) well-suited to the size requirements of mobile computers and portable equipment. The device operates on a standard 72-pin memory bus, utilizing fast-page-mode (FPM FPM - Fast Page Mode Dynamic Random Access Memory ) and extended-data-out (EDO Edo: see Tokyo, Japan. ) operating modes. Small-Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module: The SO DIMM Permitting FPM and EDO operating modes in the same socket, these small, thin DRAM modules provide an economical, space saving solution to notebook, sub notebook and printer DRAM memory requirements. The SO DIMM PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl. PCB in full polychlorinated biphenyl Any of a class of highly stable organic compounds prepared by the reaction of chlorine with biphenyl, a two-ring compound. has 72 pins, with 36 pins on each side of the module. The dimensions of the SO DIMM are 2.35 x 1.0 x 0.14 inches, which compare to 5.25 x 1.0 x 0.35 inches for standard-size 72-pin SIMMs. Capable of extending today's memory chip technology into the future, the SO DIMM is ready for today's 4-Mbit DRAMs as well as future 64- and 256-Mbit generations. Standards are being established for utilization of each generation for DRAM. Modules will eventually be available in 64-and 128-Mbyte versions. The largest configuration of the SO DIMM now in production by Smart is organized 4M x 32 bits, which delivers 16 Mbytes of memory. The company has 32-Mbyte versions in development. "Per megabyte One million bytes, or more precisely 1,048,576 bytes. Also MB, Mbyte and M-byte. See mega and space/time. (unit) megabyte - (MB, colloquially "meg") 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes = 1024 kilobytes. 1024 megabytes are one gigabyte. , the prices for SO DIMMs today are approximately the same as for SIMMs, but the utility and effectiveness of SO DIMMs in mobile computers and portable equipment far outweigh the advantages of SIMMs," said Bill Johnston
The Company Smart Modular Tech designs and manufactures an extensive line of DRAM single in-line memory modules See SIMM. (storage) Single In-line Memory Module - (SIMM) A small circuit board or substrate, typically about 10cm x 2cm, with RAM integrated circuits or die on one or both sides and a single row of pins along one long edge. (SIMMs) and dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs), Flash SIMMs and Level-2 Cache Memory Modules as well as DRAM, Flash and Fax/Modem PC cards. One of the computer industry's largest producers of memory modules and PC standards, Smart designs and manufactures all of its products in company-owned facilities in Fremont, California For the unincorporated community in Yolo County, California, see . Fremont (IPA: /ˈfriːmɒnt/) is a city in California that was incorporated on January 23, 1956, from the merger of five smaller communities: . Total monthly output of more than 300 types of memory modules and cards exceeds 500,00 units.
