Sliding doors: get into the groove ... with Tezuka architects.Tezuka have done great things with sliding doors. The Engawa House (AR September 2005) demonstrated not only the practical benefits of removing one side of a home to exploit the relationship between inside and out along the length of a narrow plot, but also the beauty of weathering, as the timber deck is seen to leave traces of its exposure to the effects of rain and shine with a staggered tide mark articulating the integrated parallel tracks. Despite this, its very presence is signficant, however discrete, bringing benefit to the plot by maintaining extensive views to the west; a rare treat in the dense Tokyo suburbs. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] To exploit these views to maximum effect there is no column at the south-west corner, allowing the spaces to flow from inside to out across the timber deck that extends right up to the edge of the site.
