Sleepy Children Suffer Sprains and Spills.
Children who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk for
injury. Children who have slept less than 10 hours in a day are at an 86
percent increased risk of injury. Also, children who had been awake for
at least eight hours without a nap were four times more likely to suffer
from an injury. When researchers analyzed the data by gender, boys had a
more than 200 percent higher injury risk. Children age 3 to 5 were most
susceptible to injury when suffering from lack of sleep. Consistently
applied bedtime rules are an important tactic as parents try to minimize
their child's risk of being hurt.
