Sleeping with the enemy: hotel industry first target of NAACP payback initiative.

Money talks. And when you represent some $200 million of it, you can be extremely persuasive. Or so the NAACP NAACP

Survey questions included "How many of your vendors are African American-owned companies?" and "What products or services are currently being provided by black-owned companies?" Another question, "How many African Americans were employed in decision-making positions such as general manager roles," was answered by only one of the surveyed hotels, the Marriott, which has at least three African American general managers in their full-service hotels. "That is an important issue," Mfume says. "We can do more than just dean hotels."

As a first step, Mfume canceled a previously scheduled NAACP regional leadership conference that was to be held at a DoubleTree Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas Little Rock, Arkansas

of the questionnaire was based on a rating system reflecting the proportion of the U.S. population that is African American, 13%. The rankings were as follows: 0%-5.9% = D; 6%-9.9% = C; 10%-13.9% = B; and 14% and above = A. Within the five categories, each question was graded and could receive a maximum of four points, with 4.0 representing an "A" and 0.0 equaling an "F". The points were then totaled for each category and divided by the number of questions in the survey.

As of press time, NAACP officials indicated they were updating the survey to include hotels that had not participated during the first round. Several hotel heads indicated they would have participated during the first session but missed the organization's deadline.

The hotels that responded to some degree included Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Adam's Mark Adam's Mark is a chain of five upscale hotels in the United States. As a result of the survey, the NAACP created the Consumer Guide to the Hotel Industry. While not calling for an outright boycott of the surveyed hotel chains, Mfume hopes corporate and civic organizations, as well as individual travelers, will consult the guide when planning future events.

Thus far, the initiative has struck a chord with many of the groups acting with the NAACP. "We plan to be 100% supportive," says Sheila Vaden-Williams, executive director of the National Automobile Dealers Association. "The NAACP was extremely smart to forge an alliance with 55 organizations. That alliance is a wake-up call. The time has come to consider us equal trading partners."

Samuel A. Carradine Jr., executive director of the National Association of Minority Contractors, says he was especially concerned because minority contractors were routinely excluded from significant participation m private-sector construction work. "I think the awareness within the industry will be heightened by this effort, and I hope it will result in some constructive engagement with them as to being far more responsive."

Reaction from the targeted hotels has been mixed. Tom Marder, a spokesman for Marriott International, says the chain is making adequate progress in terms of expanding minority opportunities. Marriott recently named its first African American franchisee, Bill Deramus, who will lease and operate a 153-room Courtyard Marriott near the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Marder says he's willing to talk to Mfume about improving minority opportunities. The hotel industry was just the start, says Mfume. Alarms may soon be going off in other areas, as the NAACP has plans to issue similar reports on corporations and businesses in the retail, automobile and food and beverage F&B is a common abbreviation in the United States and Commonwealth countries, including Hong Kong. "We have let them ignore us, but have not ignored them in return. In the past, we have not unleashed our collective economic clout to leverage employment, education, business and philanthropic opportunities for our community," says Mfume. "We have sat like beggars on bags of gold. But the sleeping giant is awake."
