Skyscraper Museum opens exhibition on Twin Towers.


"GIANTS: The Twin Towers & the Twentieth Century," an exhibition opening at The Skyscraper Museum Founded in 1997, the Skyscraper Museum, located in New York City in the United States, is currently the only museum of its kind in the world. As the name suggests, the museum focuses on high-rise buildings as "objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction,  today (September 6) and running through February 2007, commemorates the original World Trade Center, viewing its creation in the context of the technological ambitions of the 1960s and the hundred-year evolution of New York's skyline.

On their completion in 1971 and 1973, the Twin Towers were both the tallest and the largest skyscrapers in the world. Innovative engineering carried the structures to 110 stories, at 1362 and 1368 feet, and floors of nearly an acre multiplied mul·ti·ply 1

 the space of each tower into more than 4 million s/f. The scale of these giants has been exceeded only once in history, by the contemporary Sears Tower Sears Tower, Chicago, the world's third tallest building. Until the opening of the 1,483-ft (452-m) Petronas Towers (1997) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it was the world's tallest building. Constructed from 1970 to 1974 for Sears, Roebuck & Co.  in 1974. By comparison, the Freedom Tower, the largest building planned for Ground Zero, will contain only 2.6 million s/f, about two-thirds of their volume.

The exhibition will feature architectural and engineering models, construction photographs and films, drawings and other documents addressing the planning and design on the complex. The multimedia installation will include video and audio clips, as well as interactive touch-screens that allow visitors to view hundreds of construction photographs in the Museum's collection and to see and hear interviews of key figures in the Trade Center's design and development.

The dramatic installation design by Jake JAKE Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment  Barton of Local Projects will feature light columns that use the gallery's unique floor and ceiling of mirror-polish stainless steel stainless steel: see steel.
