Skunk train expands service.

Skunk Train expands service Winding through Mendocino County redwoods between Fort Bragg and Willits, the Skunk long since replaced its original cargo--logs--with sightseers. They ride along the Noyo River in motor cars like the one below, or in coaches behind a diesel locomotive; on rare occasion, a classic 1924 Baldwin 282 steam engine does the pulling. The train's enduring popularity has prompted expanded service this summer: new barbecue dinner excursions, additional off-season runs, and scheduled steam-engine trips.

Four trains provide daily service through September 6. They leave Fort Bragg at 9:20 and 1:35, depart Willits at 8:50 and 1:45, with about an hour's stopover at each end. The last train returns to Fort Bragg at 4:35, at Willits at 5:20. Roundtrip fare is $20, $10 for ages 5 through 11 ($16 and $8 one way).

For a half-day round trip, ride one of the regular trains to the midpoint--Northspur--for a brief layoever in a shady grove where you can buy food and souvenirs. The outing takes 3 hours from Fort Bragg, 4 from Willits. On Saturdays from September 13 through October 25, new off-season trips to Northspur leave Fort Bragg at 10 and 2. On August 30 and September 20, the Baldwin engine will make the Fort Bragg-Northspur run. Fare is $16, $8 for ages 5 through 11.

Through September 6, Saturday wine and barbecue trips to Northspur leave Fort Bragg at 5:30, return at 9:15. Cost is $30, $20 for ages 11 and under.
