Jackson golf tourney scheduled Aug. 7

The Luke Jackson Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 7 at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

The tournament, inaugurated a year ago by the former Creswell High School and University of Oregon standout, benefits local high school sports programs.

The event will include a dinner and celebrity auction on Aug. 6, with golfing the next day. Information on the event is available at www.lukejacksongolf.com or by calling (541) 684-4439.

Canby's Ziegler earns spot in U.S. Junior Amateur

CRESWELL - Robbie Ziegler of Canby shot a two-round 1-under-par 143 on Monday to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Ziegler and runner-up Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C., who finished five strokes behind, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in California on July 17-22.

Andrew Vijarro of Bend (149) and Justin Smithhisler of Roseburg (151) earned alternate slots.

Eugene's Jack Pennington tied for 10th at 159 with Jesse Schutte of Florence.

Polski's 69 sits second at men's amateur

PORTLAND - Paul Bonorden of Snohomish, Wash., carded a 4-under-par 68 on Monday to take the first-round lead in the Oregon Men's Amateur Championship at the Portland Golf Club.

Eugene's Chris Polski and Redmond's Tim Sundseth are tied for second, one stroke behind at 69.

The tournament continues today with the second round of stroke play.

Kim leads women's amateur; Nealy seventh

PORTLAND - Rebecca Kim shot a 3-over-par 75 to take the opening-round lead in the Oregon Women's Amateur Championship at the Portland Golf Club on Monday.

Kim holds a three-stroke lead over a group of three players. Former Oregon golfer Johnna Nealy shot an 81 and is tied for seventh, six shots off the pace. Eugene's Kendra Little is tied for 11th at 83.

The tournament continues today with the second round of stroke play.

Oregon lineman nominated for award

University of Oregon senior center Enoka Lucas and Oregon State sophomore guard Jeremy Perry are among 54 players nominated for consideration for the Outland Trophy, which annually has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946.

The 6-foot-4, 299-pound Lucas is a two-year starter. He is one of six players from the Pac-10 nominated for the award, given out by the Football Writers Association of America The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) is one of the organizations whose College Football All-America Team is recognized by the NCAA. The organization also selects the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, the Outland Trophy  award.

Perry started all 11 games last season. He was selected the Pac-10 Conference's co-Freshman of the Year in and named to the honorable mention team. He also earned freshman all-America honors by the Sporting News and the College Football News.
