Navajo Tribal Police Navajo Tribal Police or Navajo Nation Police is the law enforcement agency on the Navajo Nation in the Southwestern United States. It is under the Navajo Division of Public Safety. It is headed by a Chief of Police, six Police Captains and eight Police Lieutenant.  Sergeant Jim Chee Jim Chee is one of two Navajo Tribal Police detectives in a series of mystery novels by Tony Hillerman. Unlike his superior Joe Leaphorn, the "Legendary Lieutenant", Chee is a staunch believer in traditional Navajo culture; indeed, he is studying to be a traditional healer at the  and his fiancee Bernie Manuelito investigate diamonds and dead bodies at the bottom of the Grand Canyon in this satisfyingly complex mystery novel. Lt. Joe Leaphorn, retired, serves as the frame for the story, telling it in flashback flash·back

All die, including John Clark, a diamond merchant, whose arm is severed with a case of special diamonds handcuffed to it. A shaman finds the arm and the diamonds. Over the years he gives the gems to several people. One recipient, a Hopi named Billy Tuve, tries to pawn the $20,000 gem for $20. He is arrested for theft and his cousin enlists Jim's help in clearing Billy.
