The new levy, coupled with the existing library construction levy, would boost the total library levy next year from 8 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation to 16 cents. That's an increase of $12 a year for a homeowner with a house assessed at $150,000. Assuming voters approve the proposed new improvement bond, once the existing library construction levy expires in 2009, the levy rate would drop to 11 cents per $1,000 to cover the new levy. If voters don't approve the new bond, the levy rate would drop to zero. The existing 20-year levy was approved in 1989 to build the library. Library Director Steve Skidmore said the proposed $1.75 million bond would pay for a host of improvements to the facility, whose patronage Patronage See also Philanthropy. What it's for: Expand the 15,000-square-foot facility by 5,900 square feet, including more space for books, a teen room, a separate room for public access computers, 18 more parking spots, and space for book sorting. How it would be financed: Property tax of 11 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation after the bond levy that paid for the library's construction expires in 2010. Until then, the combined levy rate of the new and the existing levies would be 16 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
