Capitol, seat of the U.S. government at Washington, D.C. It is the city's dominating monument, built on an elevated site that was chosen by George Washington in consultation with Major Pierre L'Enfant.

 recently approved a site in southwest Washington, D.C., to construct a memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The site is located on Maryland Ave. between Fourth and Sixth Streets.

The plan, however, is drawing some criticism because the plan will close a section of Maryland Ave. Some say the permanent closure will result in the backup of traffic. The plan has yet to be finalized See finalization. , as a vote from the Washington City Council is required to approve the street closure.

Congress created the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial is a proposed United States presidential memorial to be constructed for United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

On October 25, 1999, the United States Congress created the Dwight D.
 Commission in 1999, which includes senators, representatives and presidential appointees. The commission considered 26 different locations for the memorial before deciding on the Maryland Ave. location in "Area 1." Area 1 is designated by the Memorials and Museums Master Plan as the district's "monumental mon·u·men·tal  
adj.

 core." The memorial was given authorization for placement within Area 1 by the President and Congress in May.
