For those not yet familiar with the author's celebrity, this journey through a collection of western paintings she has chosen will serve to introduce her. Each of the 500 artists, arranged alphabetically al·pha·bet·i·cal   also al·pha·bet·ic

The brief text (a single paragraph) leads us into the paintings by offering a bit of context and personal commentary about attributes, the meaning of icons, and speculations about broader meanings. And there are captions that go into more detail about aspects of the work. Her manner is friendly, as if she were there with you in a gallery and she was thinking out loud about her impressions. Her interest is "to keep you in the presence of the painting," to help you linger lin·ger
