Singapore symposium on photonics. The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE SPIE International Society for Optical Engineering SPIE Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers SPIE Source Path Isolation Engine SPIE Special Purpose Insertion Extraction SPIE Software Process Improvement Experimentation SPIE Standard Protocols in Effect , Bellingham, WA) and Nanyang Technological University Nanyang Technological University (Abbreviation: NTU) is a major research university in Singapore. The University's garden campus, known as the Yunnan Garden campus is in the southwestern part of Singapore. , Singapore (NTU) recently cosponsored The International Symposium on Photonics and Applications (ISPA ISPA International School Psychology Association ISPA Internet Service Providers Association ISPA Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada (Portugal) ISPA International Spa Association ISPA Istituto di Scienze delle Produzioni Alimentari ), held at Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel, November 26-30, 2001. The symposium was held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Education and Training in Optics and Photonics 2001 (ETOP ETOP Engineering Turnover Package ETOP Expedited Task Order Process ), which was organized by NTU and the Singapore Chapter of SPIE and sponsored by The International Commission of Optics (ICO, Paris, France), The Optical Society of America The Optical Society of America (OSA) is a scientific society dedicated to advancing the study of light—optics and photonics—in theory and application, by means of worldwide research, scientific publishing, conferences and exhibitions, partnership with industry, and the (Washington, D.C.) and SPIE. With photonics-based technologies driving markets in Singapore, and the region, in developments in telecommunications, information storage and retrieval information storage and retrieval, the systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amounts of , biology, manufacturing, medicine, defense, novel sensing devises and applications, it has become vital to recognize how the advancing knowledge-based technology will affect the region's photonics industry. ISPA and ETOP showcased the latest developments in many areas of optics and photonics from leading technology groups around the world. Various symposium short courses covered topics such as: novel photonic materials and devices; quantum-well light sources and photodectectors; photonic integrated circuits; solgel devices and applications; photo microelectromechanical systems (MEMS); fiber optic sensors; high-speed optical networking solutions; laser engineering; laser systems and applications; biophotonics; and future developments. ETOP focused on the education aspects in these fields. The ISPA symposium drew 250 delegates, and the ETOP drew 100 for the five-day event.
