Simplicity and recognizing the "little guy" inspire newsletter's awards.


Industry awards programs can be very lucrative for the newsletter publishers sponsoring them (including, we might add, The Newsletter Awards Competition sponsored by NL/NL). They also help establish or maintain a newsletter's reputation as an authority in the field.

But it wasn't for money (although perhaps to burnish his reputation) that the editor-publisher of Jack O'Dwyer's Newsletter, "The Inside News of Public Relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most ," recently created the "O'Dwyer Award for Excellence in Public Communications."

For years, Jack O'Dwyer and the Public Relations Society of America The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), based in New York City, is the world's largest organization for public relations professionals. The organization has more than 30,000 professional and student members, and is organized into 112 chapters nationwide.  have been at odds on a number of fronts. He continues to criticize crit·i·cize

In a recent issue, O'Dwyer highlighted an impressive PR campaign by The Lund Group which culminated in a cover story in the August 12 New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Times Magazine.

He then wrote on his editorial page, "We've been hearing complaints for some time that major firms, with lots of money to toss around, have come to unfairly dominate current PR awards programs. For instance, four PR firms captured 18, or 43 percent, of the 41 Silver Anvils awarded by PRSA PRSA Public Relations Society of America
PRSA Personal Retirement Savings Account
PRSA Puerto Rican Student Association
PRSA Puerto Rican Studies Association
PRSA Park and Recreation Service Area
PRSA President of the Royal Scottish Academy
 in June out of a field of 736 entries. Plenty of good work is going unheralded because PR firms don't want to get involved in what has become a costly, rules-bound ritual dominated by a few firms with deep pockets."

He concludes his editorial with this announcement:

"To recognize the efforts of the Lund Group and others like them, the O'Dwyer Co. is starting the 'O'Dwyer Award for Excellence in Public Communications' with Lund as the first recipient.

 with gold lettering will sent to the firm. Lund will not have to fill out any forms, send us any entry fees, nor send us proofs of what it accomplished. The coverage obtained speaks for itself. PR firms and clients that feel qualified for an 'O'Dwyer Award' need only send us a brief description of their successful efforts to educate the public on a subject. Availability of the CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  or other principals involved for cross-examination by the press and public is a key element we look for. Awards will be announced throughout the year."

This is a great example of giving subscribers and the field you cover a little something extra--the "love gift" Frank Joseph recommends towards the end of our lead story (above).
