Simpact announces SNA Access Server; company purchases EXPRESS SNA Source Code from Apertus for application on Freeway-programmable gateway communication server product line.SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1994--Simpact Associates Inc. Wednesday announced the addition of Apertus' EXPRESS SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6. capabilities to its family of programmable communications gateway servers -- Freeway. This advanced connectivity software will be initially supported on the Freeway 1000, designed by Simpact specifically for remote office sites, and represents Simpact's ongoing commitment to further provide its customers with complete connectivity solutions. Called SNA Access for Freeway, this application will provide enterprisewide connectivity between UNIX systems and IBM mainframes Following are the mainframe architectures used in IBM mainframes since the original System/360 introduced in 1964. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) hosts. It will also provide users with powerful, industry-standard Application Program Interfaces (APIs), which allow programmers to develop seamless UNIX-to-mainframe applications, thus maximizing the capabilities of both systems. SNA Access for the Freeway server offers support for LU types 1, 2 and 3 for 3270, 3179-G and 3287 printer emulation, as well as LUO for custom SNA applications. SNA Access will also be capable of supporting 3770 SNA/RJE system emulation and network management facilities, in addition to supporting Apertus' EXPRESS Integrated Desktop and other industry 3270 and 5250 emulators. Supporting most industry standards, the family of Freeway servers provides users with a seamless migration path from host-based communications to distributed open systems, while maintaining easy access to all mission-critical applications. Freeway offers 8 to 64 serial ports, and uses a powerful Motorola 68040 microprocessor, giving users the flexibility to expand their networking options for a fraction of the cost normally associated with upgrades. "By integrating Apertus' EXPRESS into our Freeway servers, we will be supplying our customers with another vital tool for completing their LAN-to-WAN networking circle." The SNA Access server will be available for Beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users.
