Silverstein unveils WTC tower trio. The city and the world last week got a taste of what lies ahead for Lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North as preliminary designs for World Trade Center Towers 2, 3, and 4 were unveiled. From these preliminary designs, one thing is assured: the Freedom Tower will not live alone in the airspace above downtown. Instead, the three new giants will help create a sort of architectural staircase, or "spiral," that will lead the eye from the 1,776-foot height of the Freedom Tower down to the memorial below, designers said. Coming down in a row from north to south on Greenwich Street will be three towers designed by three world-famous architects: London-based Lord Norman Foster, Lord Richard Rogers For the American composer, see . Richard George Rogers, Baron Rogers of Riverside FRIBA (born 23 July 1933) is a British architect noted for his modernist and functionalist designs. (also of London) and Tokyo-based Fumihiko Maki Fumihiko Maki (槇文彦, Maki Fumihiko) (born Tokyo, September 6, 1928) is a Japanese architect. After studying at the University of Tokyo he moved to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and then to Harvard Graduate School of Design. . Lord Foster's 200 Greenwich Street, know so far simply as Tower 2, will feature a large diamond-cut roof that will slope down toward the memorial site. At 1,254 feet, the 78-story tower will be taller than the Empire State Building, minus the antenna. The tower will be separated into quadrants by long verticle cuts into the facade. This will both allow for maximum flexibility in regard to internal layouts and allow the building to "breathe," Foster said. "For half the year here, in the spring and again in the fall, the temperature is perfect for human habitation HABITATION, civil law. It was the right of a person to live in the house of another without prejudice to the property. 2. It differed from a usufruct in this, that the usufructuary might have applied the house to any purpose, as, a store or manufactory; whereas ," Foster said at the towers' unveiling last week. "This cut will allow the building to breathe that air in and distribute it to those inside." 200 Greenwich will stand just north of the Santiago Calatrava-designed World Trade Center PATH Transportation Hub Transportation hub is a location where traffic is exchanged across several modes of transport. These modes may include any of railway, tramway, rapid transit, bus, automobile, truck, airplane, spacecraft, ship, ferry, pedestrian or any other kind of transportation. and just East of a yet to be unveiled Frank Gehry World Trade Center Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. at a build site that features many of the world's preeminent architects. Planed to sit just south of Calatrava's transit hub, is Tower 3. This 1,155-foot tower, designed by Lord Rogers, features antennas, at all four of its corners and a sort of metallic exoskeleton exoskeleton /exo·skel·e·ton/ (-skel´e-ton) a hard structure formed on the outside of the body, as a crustacean's shell; in vertebrates, applied to structures produced by the epidermis, as hair, nails, hoofs, teeth, etc. of diamond shapes. Tower 3 would face the World Trade Center Memorial directly from the east, a fact that Rogers said played into his design of a large, open-glass street-level approach to his tower. "There should be nothing hidden. People should be able to look and see what goes on inside ... Where the people operate," Rogers said. Just south of Rogers' Tower 3, Maki's Tower 4 is planned as the shortest of the towers proposed today, rising a mere 947 feet (still far taller than any other building in the area, including the 741-foot 7 World Trade Center, in which the designs for the other towers were unveiled). Maki's skyscraper is also the most understated architecturally. According to a statement from Maki, his goal with Tower 4 was to create a "Minimalist tower." "We looked to create a quiet, dignified, feminine tower," Maki said. The presentations made last week are preliminary. Even if financing for the towers were in place--which it's not--work could not begin immediately. Any development must wait until the Port Authority completes work on the slurry wall, colloquially col·lo·qui·al adj. 1. At the unveiling last week, Port Authority vice chairman Charles Gargano assured that his agency was working to deliver the slurry wall as soon as possible. "We are committed to holding up out end," Gargano said. The slurry wall could be ready by late 2007 or 2008. Still a mystery is what will become of the proposed Tower 5, which would be built on the site currently occupied by the Deutsche Bank Building--the Liberty Street Tower that is currently being dismantled after sustaining critical damage from falling debris after the September 11 attacks September 11 attacks Series of airline hijackings and suicide bombings against U.S. targets perpetrated by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. . Designs for that tower, which are not under the control of Silverstein, have yet to be released. |
