Silverback Delivers Upgrade for Automated Server Provisioning, Availability and Manageability.

Announces Support of iSCSI Boot for iSNAP 2110 Host Bus Adapter See host adapter.

CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Silverback Systems, Inc., the leader in advanced Ethernet-acceleration technologies, today announced an iSNAP([R]) 2110 HBA (Host Bus Adapter) See host adapter.  upgrade fully supporting iSCSI Boot. Windows([R]) and Linux-based servers utilizing the iSNAP 2110 release upgrade can boot directly from iSCSI-based storage, providing the benefits of resource consolidation through use of diskless and virtualized servers, and centralized management. Support of iSCSI Boot extends iSNAP 2110's industry-leading price/performance advantage to also include better manageability, higher availability, and reduced cost of ownership for enterprise data centers.

"Through integrated iSCSI boot support within iSNAP 2110, enterprises can now implement a data center-wide boot infrastructure for their IP SANs," said Ahmet Houssein, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and president of Silverback Systems, "The combination of the industry-leading performance of iSNAP 2110 with iSCSI boot offers IT administrators a 'no compromise' approach - highly efficient iSCSI SAN connectivity and seamless iSCSI booting for all their Windows and Linux-based servers."

"Boot from SAN is a significant upgrade to IP SANs, enhancing the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of iSCSI," said Gary Gammon, senior vice president of Enterprise Sales & Marketing at Bell Microproducts, Inc. "Working with solution providers like Silverback helps ensure that our channel partners get a reliable, consistent and scalable iSCSI boot offering."

iSCSI Boot allows the server the operating system operating system (OS)

to be initialized from a remote storage array across a storage area network (SAN) rather than from the locally attached Refers to disks, printers and other peripheral devices that are connected directly to a computer via USB or FireWire. Such devices may be designed for desktop use or portability. For example, a locally-attached, stationary hard drive may weigh three to five pounds, while one made for  hard disk drive. With iSCSI Boot, IT can store server images (including applications, server images, settings, and data) on the IP SAN, and administer these from a single location. Benefits of iSCSI Boot enables improved server provisioning and enhanced recoverability in face of server failure. New servers can be dynamically deployed using the images on the IP SAN, rather than reinstalling the server operating system See network operating system. , application setting, configuration setting, and data from backup tape See tape backup. .

The iSCSI Boot technology will also help simplify next generation blade designs by converging SAN connectivity onto a standard Ethernet fabric in the backplane An interconnecting device that has sockets for printed circuit boards to plug into.

Passive and Active
Although resistors may be used, a "passive" backplane adds no processing in the circuit.
while eliminating the need for a local hard drive on individual server blades. This approach significantly reduces overall system design complexity and does not require changes to existing operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. .
