SilverStream Ships Enterprise Application Server Version 2.0.

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--

Only Application Server to Combine High-Performance Server

And High-Productivity Development Environment

SilverStream Software today shipped the latest version of its Enterprise Application Server, the only high-performance application server to combine the scalability, reliability, security and manageability needed to deploy enterprise Web applications, with a fully integrated high-productivity, development environment.

With this release, the SilverStream Enterprise Application Server adds:

"SilverStream is changing the way that applications are being written," said Richard Grove, Internet Solution Provider for Chevron Information Technology Company. Grove has developed an investment tracking application that tracks millions of dollars in hundreds of limited partnerships. "With SilverStream, we've linked a huge amount of information stored in an Oracle database and can present it to users via a Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . SilverStream is one of the few Web application server products which provides complete database integration, tight security and an exquisite development environment. It was a natural choice for creating this application. We plan on using this Intranet application to showcase SilverStream's capabilities to our other customers."

David Skok, founder and chairman of SilverStream, the key to an enterprise architecture is full interoperability across all applications and data. "With SilverStream, companies can move to the Web and link to already-installed systems -- connecting employees, customers, business partners and suppliers with a unified, highly collaborative, Web-based application infrastructure. And, using SilverStream, developers can produce and deliver these enterprise-quality Web applications rapidly thanks to the product's integrated, highly intuitive development environment," he said.

Skok added that the addition of enterprise features like load balancing, server and session-level failover, and server side distributed business objects makes the SilverStream Application Server an enterprise tour-de-force.

Enterprise Application Server Features

SilverStream's Enterprise Application Server offers load balancing for scalability, fail-over and automatic restart for reliability and recoverability, and an intuitive management console. It also allows SNMP-enabled consoles to monitor SilverStream application servers.

Session-Level Failover

In addition to built-in load-balancing capabilities and server-level failover, the SilverStream Enterprise Application Server provides the ultimate in application availability: session-level failover. A must-have for companies performing mission-critical business transactions over the Web, session-level failover insures that the application is always running and that any interruptions to an application are completely invisible to the end-user.

To understand the importance of session level failover, imagine a user transferring money from one account to another. They will go through several screens to set up the transaction and then press the "commit" button. If the server that they are working with fails at that point, their browser will display an error message, and they will not know whether the funds were transferred or not. This is clearly unacceptable in e-commerce or other transaction processing environments. Session-level failover solves this problem by ensuring that a user's session information is automatically restored on another available server. The user will be spared the error message and the transaction will be completed as expected.

Broad Data Connectivity and Interoperability

SilverStream's Data Source Objects allow connectivity to any application or data source in the enterprise. The Application Server's broad connectivity options allow corporations to unify disparate data sources and applications using a common, object-oriented programming API. Data connectors will be available from SilverStream for SAP, PeopleSoft and Notes. Additionally, third-party partners will be delivering data connectors for other data sources such as CICS and MQSeries. Developers can also easily bind an application's individual user interface controls to any selected data source for superior developer productivity.

Breakthrough HTML Development Environment

An industry first -- SilverStream offers a totally new, visual, object-oriented and event-driven HTML development environment. Users trained in event-driven programming will now be able to work with HTML in a completely familiar, visual, event-driven, object-oriented programming environment. This new feature eliminates the tedium of linear HTML coding and CGI scripting commonly associated with standard HTML development.

"Users are telling us that HTML-based application development, with SilverStream, is four to ten times faster then competing environments," said Skok.

Distributed Business Objects

their business logic into reusable objects, creating multi-tier distributed applications. SilverStream also supports CORBA as a native object model which allows these Business Objects to be distributed anywhere on the network and accessed in a standard way by non-SilverStream environments. The Application Server can be used to create and call out to DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) Formerly Network OLE, it is Microsoft's technology for distributed objects. DCOM is based on COM, Microsoft's component software architecture, which defines the object interfaces.  objects when running on Windows NT. Data binding to any desired business object is automatically available.

Enterprise Java Beans

With this release, SilverStream Software has added the framework to fully support Enterprise Java Beans in the next version of its SilverStream Enterprise Application Server.

"Today, SilverStream enables its customers to build complete application solutions based on a broad set of standard Web-based services and connectivity to other sources of corporate data such as SAP, PeopleSoft, and Notes," said Skok. "With SilverStream, any IT department can create and/or acquire truly universal, reusable, portable distributed objects This article or section has multiple issues:

for use in its corporate infrastructure. Our current support of COM and CORBA, together with the framework we've implemented to support EJB, means that organizations can incrementally build their Web infrastructure without losing their investment in current solutions."

SilverStream is also participating with Sun and other vendors in the on-going process of maturing and extending the EJB specification.
