SilverStream Enhances Award-Winning Application Server.

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999--

SilverStream 2.5 Offers Comprehensive Database Support,

Superior Server Performance, Maximum Scalability For Powerful,

High-Volume Web Applications

SilverStream Software, Inc., today introduced SilverStream 2.5, the latest version of its award-winning Application Server which provides organizations with new and enhanced features and functionality -- including enhanced server performance, increased data connectivity and enhanced database support --to easily develop, deploy and manage the most robust enterprise-class Web applications.

New features of SilverStream version 2.5 include:

-- Superior Server Performance makes applications running on the SilverStream Application Server for the Solaris Operating Environment even more robust and scalable. SilverStream 2.5 for Solaris now supports the Java 2-compliant Java Virtual Machine A Java interpreter. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is software that converts the Java intermediate language (bytecode) into machine language and executes it. The original JVM came from the JavaSoft division of Sun.  for Sun Microsystems. Industry benchmarks have shown this new JVM See Java Virtual Machine.

It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language.  1.1 predecessor, and internal benchmarks of the SilverStream Application Server for Solaris show a significant performance gain on this new JVM.

-- Expanded connectivity to legacy databases - SilverStream is offering a limited release of new Enterprise Data Connectors (EDCs) for SAP R/3, PeopleSoft, and Lotus Notes. Unique to SilverStream, the EDCs include advanced wizards that step a developer through the process of connecting to these data sources while automatically writing most of the code required. With SilverStream's single, open enterprise architecture, and its new Enterprise Data Connectors, organizations can easily integrate disparate data sources into a single application.

-- Enhanced Database Support - designed to assure corporations that their applications will benefit from robust database connectivity as well as Y2K See Y2K problem and Y2K compliant.

Y2K - Year 2000

IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  DB/2, Oracle and Sybase. SilverStream 2.5 ships with enhanced support for new database versions such as Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere 6.0 (SQL Anywhere), IBM DB2 version 5.2, and Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System.  7.0, in addition to support for a native JDBC driver for Informix databases.

-- Wizards Enhancements to Support Data Source Objects - The patent-pending Data Source Object (DSO See CSO. ) technology, introduced in SilverStream 2.0, allows connectivity to any application or data source in the enterprise, such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) An integrated information system that serves all departments within an enterprise. Evolving out of the manufacturing industry, ERP implies the use of packaged software rather than proprietary software written by or for one customer.  applications, groupware, XML XML

The enhanced page and form designers show developers data from both relational databases as well as any other enterprise data sources accessed via a DSO. The new wizards automatically bind an application's individual user interface controls to virtually all selected data sources for superior developer productivity.

The HP-UX operating environment is recognized as a robust, high performance operating system long known for its scalability and enterprise capabilities and marks the third such OS -- including Windows NT and Solaris -- on which SilverStream runs.

-- Expanded Internationalization Support - SilverStream currently supports nine languages, including a Japanese version with full-localized Kanji. Version 2.5 now includes a Korean translation for the HTML Edit Control, SilverStream JRunner, and server-to-browser error messages. Both Traditional and Simplified Chinese language are expected to be added in an upcoming 2.5 point release.

-- SilverStream version 2.5 includes enhancements to support client-side X.509 certificates. With these certificates, customers will be able to use their own server-generated certificates from servers such as Netscape Certificate Server. In addition, X.509 certificates appear as an authentication option in the SilverStream Management Console (SMC SMC Saint Mary's College
SMC Santa Monica College
SMC Solaris Management Console
SMC Smooth Muscle Cell
SMC Small Magellanic Cloud (also see LMC)
SMC Safety Management Certificate (maritime shipping)
). The SMC allows administrators to configure X.509 authentication in several ways with "rules" for accepting trusted and unknown client certificates.

"SilverStream continues to deliver the functionality and cutting-edge technology that enables us to create transaction-intensive, scaleable Web applications that can keep up with us as we grow," said Jim Blankenship, Transamerica Intellitech. "The new features in SilverStream 2.5 will enable us to interface with our legacy applications and to leverage a host of new data sources. This allows us to maximize productivity and to fully take advantage of the power of our current systems through Web applications built with SilverStream."

SilverStream provides all of the services needed to help enterprises deliver complex Web applications. With SilverStream's fully integrated development environment See IDE.
