Silver Lining Expands.

Alaskan Glacier Seafoods, one of Petersburg's oldest processing plants, became a division of Silver Lining Seafoods of Ketchikan on Jan. 1, 1990. Alaskan Glacier's founder, Earl Ohmer, began processing shrimp in 1916 in Petersburg. Later he added crab.

The plant is owned by Earl Ohmer's grandson, Dave Ohmer, and his mother, Gloria Ohmer. After Alaskan Glacier's previous plant was completely gutted by fire on Feb. 1, 1985, the Ohmer family built a new Alaskan Glacier plant in Petersburg in 1986.

"I'm excited about this change," says Ohmer, who manages Alaskan Glacier's operation. "We've been working with Silver Lining for the last few years. This should provide better service to both the fishermen and our customers. With Silver Lining's larger sales staff, I hope new markets will open."

Ohmer's "Frigid Zone" crab and shrimp add highly regarded items to Silver Lining's salmon and halibut products. Plans are for both businesses to continue to operate independently. Shareholders in the new corporation, Silver Lining Seafoods Co., are the Ohmers of Alaskan Glacier; Terry and Linda Gardiner, Bob Waldrop, John Sund and Dick Bishop of Silver Lining.
