Siltanen provides Marist an MVP hit.

Byline: PAULA LINCOLN The Register-Guard

Last week, Marist senior Chelsey Siltanen was named the Sky-Em League's most valuable player.

Wednesday, the talented four-time first-team infielder showed why she's worthy of the honor when she ripped a single up the middle to drive in Amy Perkins with the game's only run to give the Spartans a 1-0 victory over Henley in the second round of the Class 3A state softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  playoffs.

Marist (22-2) will travel to Sherwood in a quarterfinal game Friday in what will be the fourth straight year the Spartans have advanced that far in the playoffs. Sherwood beat La Grande 14-13 on Wednesday.

"I was a little excited with a runner at third in the bottom of the sixth and I knew I wanted to hit the ball on the ground and see what would happen," Siltanen said. "I knew I had to be aggressive and take anything that was close or the opportunity would pass," said Siltanen, acknowledging that being a No. 3 hitter is "a little role reversal In psychodrama, role reversal is a technique where the protagonist is asked, by the psychodrama director, to exchange roles with another person (an auxiliary ego) on the psychodrama stage. The former assumes as many of the roles of the other as possible and vice versa. " from her days as a leadoff hitter In baseball, a leadoff hitter is a batter who bats first in the lineup. Strategy

Perkins, a freshman who plays right field for Marist, lined a first-pitch triple to left-center field to lead off the sixth inning and scored when Siltanen hit her second pitch past Henley's second baseman second baseman

It was the second hit of the game for Perkins, who had an infield single in her first at-bat and was hit by a pitch on her second.

"I just see it and then hit it as hard as I can," Perkins said, adding that Marist coach Bob Hammitt "gave me the sign and told me to keep going."

Meanwhile, Marist pitcher Caley Peterson tossed a one-hitter with a walk (on an illegal fourth pitch) and an error accounting for the Hornets' three baserunners. She finished with six strikeouts including two in the fifth after Henley's Jessica Birt, who was the only Hornet hornet: see wasp.  to hit the ball out of the infield, singled and stole second.

Birt struck out four and walked two. She got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the third - after Betty McClellan walked, Perkins was hit by a pitch and Siltanen hit a single up the middle - when Stephanie Singer flew out to center and Perkins was caught off second.

Marist had two runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  in the bottom of the first when Shannon Stacy reached on an error and Perkins was safe at first on an infield single. The Hornets got out of the inning when catcher Kristiann Kinsman kins·man
