Silicon Laboratories Achieves XM Radio Type Approval Certification for Satellite Radio Tuners.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Si2211/12 Measure Best-in-Class Performance on Key Specifications

Silicon Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq:SLAB) today announced that its Si2211 and Si2212 Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service Digital Audio Radio Service or DARS refers to any type of digital radio service. In the United States it is the official FCC term for digital radio services.

The most popular type of DARS in the U.S.
(SDARS SDARS Satellite Digital Audio Radio Services ) tuners have attained XM Radio type approval certification. The highly integrated Si2211 and Si2212 are the industry's only SDARS tuners implemented in 100 percent CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes. . The Si2211 and Si2212 lower the bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  for XM radio receivers by significantly reducing the board space and component count typically required by competing solutions.

By achieving best-in-class performance on several key metrics for mobile applications, the Si2211 and Si2212 enable XM radio manufacturers to further improve reception performance, especially under harsh conditions like those found in an automotive environment. The Si2211 implements a single SAW superheterodyne See superheterodyne receiver.  architecture that supports next generation satellite receivers and allows radio manufacturers to reduce costs. The Si2212 integrates the functionality of two Si2211 tuners creating the only single-chip dual branch solution for enhanced satellite radio service for next generation radios. The availability of both ICs offers customers greater flexibility and quicker time-to-market when designing both single and dual branch satellite radios.

"Silicon Laboratories is an innovator in radio technology," said Anh Nguyen, vice president of RF technology for XM Satellite Radio. "By exceeding our stringent technical requirements and achieving type approval, Silicon Laboratories' revolutionary technology will facilitate the development of the highest quality satellite radios."

"Full type approval is additional validation of our tuner technology and is an important step in accelerating the adoption of our solution among the variety of radio manufacturers working with XM radio," said Dave Bresemann, vice president of Silicon Laboratories. "The Si2211 and Si2212 build upon our success in satellite radio with the RF synthesizers by providing the best performing and most integrated SDARS solution on the market."
