SigmaPlot 7.1 From SPSS Inc. Delivers Faster, More Efficient Graphing of Scientific Data.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 2001

Newest version of scientific graphing software

integrates with SPSS A statistical package from SPSS, Inc., Chicago (www.spss.com) that runs on PCs, most mainframes and minis and is used extensively in marketing research. It provides over 50 statistical processes, including regression analysis, correlation and analysis of variance.  analytical software Analytical software is software that is designed specifically for and development of a particular environment or object.  to create a

comprehensive scientific data analysis and graphing system

SPSS and SigmaPlot, two of SPSS Inc.'s (Nasdaq: SPSS) most widely used software tools, now work together to form a complete scientific data analysis and graphing system. For the hundreds of thousands of SPSS and SigmaPlot customers who use these tools for scientific research and analysis, this integration delivers the ability to turn raw data into professional-quality, informative graphs more quickly and efficiently than ever before.

This integration means that SPSS users can create and edit publication-quality scientific graphs without ever leaving SPSS. And SigmaPlot users can add the analytical power of SPSS, the leading desktop data analysis tool, to complement the graphing power of SigmaPlot. The latest versions of each software--SigmaPlot 7.1 and SPSS 11.0--are required. SPSS 11.0, released in September, is available worldwide from SPSS BI, a division of SPSS Inc. SigmaPlot 7.1 is currently shipping worldwide from SPSS Science, a division of SPSS Inc.

Used by more than 100,000 research professionals, SigmaPlot is the technical graphing software standard. SigmaPlot enables scientific researchers to:
- Create charts that display the results of their work clearly and precisely.

- Edit and customize nearly every graph element, including the color, style,
size and location of axes, symbols, text, lines, error bars and legends.

- Publish professional-quality, high-resolution graphs just about anywhere:
printed journals or reports, electronic presentations and Web pages.

"The integration of SPSS and SigmaPlot delivers value to three key scientific user groups: SPSS users, SigmaPlot users and those already using both programs," said Ken Kirsten, SigmaPlot senior marketing manager. "By adding SigmaPlot, SPSS users gain advanced scientific graphing capabilities not otherwise available in SPSS. SigmaPlot users who add SPSS get unrivaled analytical power. And those who are already using both programs as separate standalone tools gain a substantial increase in efficiency and time-savings.

"In addition to the direct value these new releases deliver to our users, they are also a sign of our ongoing effort to develop software with an eye toward the way our customers work," said Kirsten. "By creating products that work together to form complete systems, we can give our clients ready-made solutions. From comprehensive survey solutions that include data collection, data analysis and results deployment, to the complementary scientific data analysis and graphing system created by the integration of SPSS and SigmaPlot, SPSS is committed to helping our customers solve their problems and improve the quality of their research."

SigmaPlot offers graphing options specific to the scientific world such as overlay charts, asymmetric error bars, regression lines, secondary axes, axes breaks, technical axes scale options, custom tick markers and annotations. Add-ons such as the Enzyme Kinetics Enzyme kinetics is the study of the rates of chemical reactions that are catalysed by enzymes. The study of an enzyme's kinetics provides insights into the catalytic mechanism of this enzyme, its role in metabolism, how its activity is controlled in the cell and how drugs and  and Electrophysiology modules provide custom capabilities for specific research applications.

SigmaPlot is used in a wide range of fields including medical research, life sciences, drug discovery and development, chemistry, engineering, environmental science and physics and has won several awards including nine consecutive Scientific Computing and Instrumentation Reader's Choice Awards for presentation graphics software, NASA Tech Briefs NASA Tech Briefs is a magazine published by the National Aeronautics and Space Agency of the United States. This magazine is available, in either print form or electronically as PDF files, for free.  Product of the Month and Computers in Physics Product of the Month.

New features of SigmaPlot 7.1 include:

- Export graphs in vector EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) A PostScript file format used to transfer a graphic image between applications and platforms. EPS files contain PostScript code as well as an optional preview image in TIFF, WMF, PICT or EPSI, the latter being an ASCII-only format.  CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow blacK) The color space used for commercial printing and most color computer printers. In theory, cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) can print all colors, but inks are not pure and black comes out muddy.  format - SigmaPlot graphs can

now be exported in vector EPS file format with CMYK color, the

format preferred by much of the publishing world.

- Full copy and paste To copy files from one location to another or to copy text and images from one document to another. All modern operating systems and applications have a copy and paste capability that is typically selected from an Edit menu. See cut and paste and Win Copy between windows.  of Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world.

Latest version: Excel 97, as of 1997-01-14.
 data - Data pasted from

Excel spreadsheets maintain original date/time values.

- Enhanced fills for intersections of area line plots - Users can

accentuate intersections in area line plots with additional

colors.

- New Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market.  macro - New macro automates the process of

importing graphs into Word documents, saving time and effort.

- New keyboard shortcuts - Users can now perform certain functions

with a few keystrokes, significantly improving SigmaPlot's

ease-of-use.
