Sigma Designs' Media Processor Nominated by EDN Magazine in its 17th Annual Innovation of the Year Awards Competition.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- Sigma Designs (Nasdaq:SIGM), a leader in digital media processing See media control.  for consumer electronics, has been selected from a field of hundreds as a finalist for this year's EDN Innovator/Innovation Awards. Sigma's SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. Instituted in 1990, EDN's annual Innovation Awards honor outstanding electronic products and professionals, as selected by a peer jury of engineers and engineering managers worldwide. An online ballot featuring all finalists is available at www.edn.com/innovation.

Sigma Designs' SMP8634 is the first single-chip solution to support high-definition decoding of all major formats including MPEG-4, MPEG-2 ,and VC-1 within one of the most advanced secure media processing platforms. The chip is supported by a robust real-time software suite under both Linux and WinCE to help OEMs achieve fast time to market. Shipping since early 2006, the SMP8634 has already become the most widely used chip for powering IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) Also called "TV over IP," IPTV delivers scheduled TV programs and video-on-demand (VOD) via the IP protocol and digital streaming techniques used to watch video on the Internet.  set-top boxes (MicrosoftTV or Linux) and high definition DVD players (Blu-ray or HD DVD). Before Sigma's SMP8634, these consumer electronics technologies required two or more different kinds of media processors. Like all Sigma technology, the SMP8634 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) is a universal technology that is compliant with all major TV and DVD-related standards and video decoding formats popular in the market today.

Sigma's SMP8634 is currently inside IPTV set-top boxes made by Motorola, Philips and SA/Cisco that are running the Microsoft IPTV and Linux operating systems. The chip is also in six Blu-ray players made by Sony, Pioneer and Panasonic, among others.

Industry estimates show Sigma's SMP8634 chip is in about 75% of the IPTV set-top boxes worldwide, more than any other semiconductor offered to the industry, making Sigma a true pioneer in leading global IPTV services. In 2005, Sigma was the only company with chip technology ready for IPTV when companies like Microsoft, Motorola and AT&T began development plans for the North American North American

In addition to North American deployments, Sigma's SMP8634 SoCs are already in set-top boxes around the world and are offered by telcos including British Telecom, Deutsche Telecom, Neuf, Free, and Swisscom in Europe and China Netcom, China Telecom and Hanaro in Asia.

"Our 2006 roster of Innovation finalists includes great products across the analog, digital, software, and test spaces. We received a tremendous set of mixed-signal ASSP (Application Specific Standard Part) An ASIC chip that is designed as a generic device for a particular market. Whereas an ASIC is typically used only by its creator, ASSPs are used by many different companies in the design of their products. This year's program features 17 categories: Innovator of the Year, Analog ICs, ASSPs and SoCs, Communication ICs, Digital ICs and Programmable Logic, Digital SoC/IP, EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  (Design and Implementation), EDA (Verification and Analysis), Embedded Systems, Power ICs, Power Systems and Modules, Processors, Sensors and Components, Software, Test and Measurement (Broad Application), Test and Measurement (Application Specific), and Best Contributed Article.

In the next few weeks, EDN's worldwide audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers will use an online ballot to select the ultimate winners from among these finalists. EDN's editorial staff and Editorial Advisory Board also take part in determining the final winners. We encourage you to visit www.edn.com/innovation to review each of the nominees. Winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony on April 2, 2007 in San Jose, CA.
