Technology in a Type II PC Card Form Factor

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR)(TSE:SW.) and Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) announced today at CTIA Wireless 2001 that they will conduct demonstrations of the Sierra Wireless cdma2000 1xRTT (Radio Transmission Technology) AirCard (R), the company's first PC card to comply with a third generation (3G) wireless network standard.

The Sierra Wireless 1xRTT AirCard, which takes advantage of Lucent's Flexent (TM) cdma2000 3G wireless system, enables high-speed wireless access from laptops, handheld computers and Internet appliances to enterprise applications, streaming audio A one-way audio transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as company networks to play audio clips and Internet radio. Computers in home networks stream audio (mostly music) to digital media hubs connected to home theaters.  and video, and the Internet.

CTIA 2001 marks the first time Sierra Wireless will demonstrate its wireless data modem A modem used for sending data and not faxes. See modem and fax/modem.  PC Card using 1xRTT technology. The Sierra Wireless 1xRTT AirCard is expected to be commercially available later this year. With this demonstration, Sierra Wireless and Lucent continue to solidify their positions as leaders in the development of new and ground-breaking solutions that enable CDMA operators to speed the commercialization of high-speed 3G mobile data services, while preserving their investment in their network infrastructure.

The Sierra Wireless 1xRTT AirCard is 1xRTT and IS95A compatible. At the Lucent Technologies booth (No. 3432) it is being used to show how it will give business users with laptops and handheld computers reliable, high-speed access to e-mail, data, corporate applications and the Internet, ensuring that they get the information they need while working away from the office. The cdma2000 1X RTT RTT - Round-Trip Time  specification is an international 3G standard evolved from today's commercially successful CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks.
