Siemens to Supply Broadband Access Technology from Unisphere Networks; Deutsche Telekom Further Expands DSL Accesses for Fast Internet.

Business/Technology Editors

CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2001

Deutsche Telekom has placed an order with Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN ICN International Council of Nurses. ) to supply and power-on broadband network access technology from the Siemens subsidiary Unisphere Networks, Inc. Unisphere's ERX Edge Routing Switch provides broadband access to the IP network and acts as a Broadband Remote Access Server A broadband remote access server (BRAS) routes traffic to and from the digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network.[1]  (BRAS) for the product T-DSL T-DSL Telekom-Digital Subscriber Line (Deutsche Telekom) . The BRAS is the Internet entry point via which users dial in to the network of their Service Provider, such as T-Online. The BRAS thus allows Fast Internet and IP VPN services to be provided cost-effectively for all T-DSL users. This order is already the biggest yet placed in Europe for BRAS technology. The Broadband Remote Access Servers are scheduled to go into operation by the end of March this year.

Unisphere's ERX will be employed as a broadband Remote Access Server (RAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Remote Access Service) A Windows NT/2000 Server feature that allows remote users access to the network from their Windows laptops or desktops via modem. See RRAS and network access server.

services (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) ensuring secure Internet access. ERX will also permit video streaming over the Internet because it routes the IP packets at delay-free "wire speed". The high data transmission rate is thanks to ERX's hardware-based ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  concept which, for design reasons, operates much faster than software-based solutions.

Deutsche Telekom's decision in favor of the Next Generation BBRAS BBRAS Broadband Remote Access Server  paves the way for the successful roll-out of IP-based services for private and business customers. Forward-thinking carriers like Deutsche Telekom are looking to offer more than just basic services; they want to offer their customers intelligent IP services across their networks while at the same time developing new revenue streams for themselves.

About ERX

Unisphere Networks' ERX edge router delivers the next-generation IP infrastructure enabling service providers to set up very fast Internet connections and provide value-added IP services for both businesses and consumers. The ERX product family routes IP packets at full wire speed at all interfaces, and is further characterized by carrier-class reliability and high port density. The ERX will also help tap new business potential with the support of IP Quality of Service (QoS), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and multi-protocol label switching (MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
).

Unisphere's ERX family comprises two models - the high capacity ERX-1400 and the mid-range ERX-700. The ERX-1400 provides scalable capacity for tens of thousands of users - with a switching capacity of up to 40 Gigabit/s - making it ideal for service providers that operate high capacity points-of-presence (POPs). Its modular, 14-slot chassis features a wide range of interface options: T1/E1, T3/E3, OC3/STM-1 (channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  and unchannelized), OC12/STM-4, and Fast/Gigabit Ethernet. The ERX-700, designed for applications that require mid-range range capacity, has the same features and performance of the ERX-1400 in a more economical 7-slot package.
