Siemens Delivers Cost-Effective Server Farm Solution With Modular NT Server Concept; The PRIMERGY Computer Node Server is a New Class of Server.

San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 1999--

Siemens announces a new class of NT server technology -- the PRIMERGY(R) N70-40 Computer Node Server -- to support the growing trend of recentralization within the IT industry.

Siemens' new compact and modularly designed high-performance computer node enables IT departments to create cost-effective "server farms" by combining various computer node servers together with external storage units to create a complete system.

In server farms, servers of the same type are brought together and jointly administered. The Node-oriented module architecture of this new class of servers offers versatile upgrading options to maximize flexibility and optimize total-cost-of-ownership in the computer center.

The PRIMERGY N70-40 Computer Node Server is equipped with up to four Intel Pentium III The successor to the Pentium II from Intel. Introduced in the spring of 1999 at 500 MHz, the Pentium III architecture was similar to the Pentium II with the addition of 70 new instructions optimized for multimedia (see SSE).  Xeon processors (500 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ), four gigabytes of main memory, four 64-bit and 32-bit PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

slots in each case, and up to four integrated hard disks. As many as eight server nodes can be combined to create a space-saving, easy-to-administer server installation using integrated cable management in a 19-inch rack.

The new PRIMERGY N70-40 offers the high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  features and reliability qualities of Siemens enterprise class servers and is fully integrated with PRIMERGY server management. Linking the PRIMERGY computer nodes and the external storage units can individually optimize computing power and data storage. Users can select between PRIMERGY S40 hard disk arrays or the Symmetrix disk subsystems from EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. 2, a Siemens partner.

Siemens new server concept is designed for a wide variety of computer center applications:

-- "Application servers" for applications such as SAP(TM) R/3(TM)

can be realized directly using the PRIMERGY computer node; -- Future-proof "database machines" with demanding hard disk

requirements can be developed by combining one or more computer

nodes with Storage Area Network (SAN) modules (such as the

Primergy S40 hard disk array range and Symmetrix memory

solutions); -- "Cluster systems" with shared hard disk pools can be implemented

by coupling computer nodes and hard disk arrays linked by Fibre

Channel; -- NT server farms with dynamic load distribution on dedicated

applications can be installed to reduce space requirements and

save costs with the PRIMERGY computer nodes.

The PRIMERGY N70-40 Computer Node Server will be available at the end of July 1999 with a variety of pricing to support an array of computer center requirements. Ready-to-run cost configurations with Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Server 4.0 will also be available.
