Sidney J. Bernstein dies at 100.


On August 30, 2004 the real estate industry lost one its senior and most respected member, Sidney J. Bernstein. He celebrated his 100th birthday this April 13.

Elegant. Mannered. A philosophical bon vivant. A man whose goals reached for something permanent beyond strictly corporate objectives. This was Sidney J. Bernstein.

In 1926 he founded Bernstein Real Estate, an organization specializing in the development, ownership, management and leasing of commercial properties. He came to work every morning until age 95, when he decided it might be time to retire. Feisty is another word that fit him.

Sidney thrived on worthwhile projects that seemed impossible. He took a daring position in the 1950's when Robert Moses This is about the urban planner; for other uses, see Robert Moses (disambiguation).

Sidney debated William Zeckendorf William Zeckendorf, Sr. (c. 1905-1976) was one of the United States' prominent real estate developers. Through his development company of Webb and Knapp (for which he began working in 1938 and which he purchased in 1949), he developed much of the New York City urban landscape. , who represented the pro-highway position, on television to gain public awareness and support. That project literally never left the ground.

Born in Brooklyn in 1904, Sidney attended Boys High and was a graduate of Columbia University Columbia University, mainly in New York City; founded 1754 as King's College by grant of King George II; first college in New York City, fifth oldest in the United States; one of the eight Ivy League institutions.  in 1924. He served with the Seebees 119th Batallion during World War II in the South Pacific.

Generous and dedicated, he spent his lifetime being involved. He was the President of the Midtown Realty Owners Association from 1960 to 1977. He was President of the Fur Trade fur trade, in American history. Trade in animal skins and pelts had gone on since antiquity, but reached its height in the wilderness of North America from the 17th to the early 19th cent.  Foundation from 1967 to 1986. He was Vice-President of the Educational Foundation of FIT. He was the Treasurer of The American Committee of Shenkar College in Israel. He and his wife established The Sidney and Anita Bernstein Library at the college located in Ramat Gan Ramat Gan (rä`mät gän), city (1994 pop. 122,200), W central Israel, adjacent to Tel Aviv. Founded in 1921, Ramat Gan is an important industrial center. Food processing is the chief industry; construction materials are also made there. , Israel.

Sidney's contribution to the real estate community was a unique mixture of business and friendship. He was a gentleman who practiced his profession with conscience and kindness.

He always believed in the goodness of a person. We will miss this man who always met you with the warmest, most welcoming, genuine smile.
