Shroud of Turin.

From Bernard Power

This will draw your attention to a new website on the Holy Shroud of Turin The Shroud of Turin (or Turin Shroud) is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have been physically traumatized in a manner consistent with crucifixion. It is being kept in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy.  at URL URL

This site aims to present a comprehensive, factual account of current research into the Shroud, with emphasis on new scientific developments aimed towards a solution of the nature of the Shroud image and the continuing mystery surrounding its origin.

The position expressed in the site is summarized as follows:

1) The current consensus of research is that the Shroud is the authentic burial shroud of Christ as recounted in the four gospels. Thus, the image on the Shroud is definitely not a fraud, forgery, or humanly hu·man·ly
adv.
1. In a human way.

2. Within the scope of human means, capabilities, or powers: not humanly possible.

3.
made artifact A distortion in an image or sound caused by a limitation or malfunction in the hardware or software. Artifacts may or may not be easily detectable. Under intense inspection, one might find artifacts all the time, but a few pixels out of balance or a few milliseconds of abnormal sound  of any kind.

2) The scientific consensus is that the image is a result of a chemical change in the linen cellulose fibrils which has been produced by a thermal/chemical means. The chemical change forms tiny microdots or "pixels" of sepia-yellow colour which make up the image, somewhat in a manner reminiscent of a half-tone reproduction.

3) The majority opinion, not yet a consensus, is that the chemical change was caused by some sort of radiation impinging on the Shroud as it enclosed the dead body of The Man in the Shroud. Infra-red or microwave radiation, and/or a flux of protons or neutrons, have been put forward as having formed the image and are currently being studied and evaluated.

Having moved to consensus on authenticity and on the chemical nature of the image on the Shroud, a new phase of research into the means which could have produced the chemical change that formed the mysterious image has opened. It is hoped that the new website will provide helpful and timely assistance to those interested in following and interpreting these new developments.

As a new reader of "Catholic Insight" I would like to say that my wife and myself enjoy it very much. We also recently subscribed to EWTN EWTN Eternal Word Television Network  (through satellite T.V.) and thus are being well informed on the state of the Catholic world. There is a tremendous amount of evil on the globe but also many signs of hope--especially in the youth.

Despite being in a good parish, we find that current Catholics do not know the basics of their religion. A great movement in studying the new Catechism of the Catholic Church The Catechism of the Catholic Church, or CCC, is an official exposition of the teachings of the Catholic Church, first published in French in 1992 by the authority of Pope John Paul II.  is needed by the laity (even the seniors), the newlyweds, and even the clergy (in some cases), and Catholic teachers educated in the 60s and 70s. There are two generations that grew up in great (or at least stultifying), error that need to be re-taught in orthodoxy. We pray for that. May all your financial needs be met to overflowing.

we are grateful to C.I. for its vigorous and active defence of the Church and orthodox teaching.

The short answer to our problems is that those who are the admirers of Jesus must become his followers!

Thanks for your tireless work.
