The act of superintending; superintendence. so we were pleased when he agreed to sit long enough for our magazine to interview him on the lessons he is drawing from the work of school system leaders. The results of that interview appear in this issue (page 20), which is largely devoted to the application of systems thinking to the role of school district leaders. We've chosen to pair the Heifetz interview with a thoughtful first-person perspective by James "Torch" Lytle, superintendent in Trenton, N.J. Lytle had the great fortune to periodically spend time over two years with Heifetz and his colleagues at the Kennedy School of Government for extended discussion, reflection and self-critique. Heifetz came to fully appreciate the scope and complexity of the superintendency from dealing with Lytle and the other selected superintendents from urban settings.
