Should staph scare you? (Disease).


Shortly after reports of an outbreak of staph infections among gay men in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  this winter, officials with the nation's largest gay health centers dialed up the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center. . The outbreak of large, painful skin infections and reports of drug resistance had generated nationwide concern.

But Roberts and other community health leaders maintain that the infections--also reported in small numbers in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and New York New York, state, United States

Health officials also emphasize that the infections are not untreatable--they require antibiotics administrated through an IV rather than orally.
