TAPPI Kraft Pulping Short Course

This highly interactive course teaches all aspects of kraft pulping. It offers participants the opportunity to apply fundamental kraft pulping knowledge to day-to-day operations, to understand the basic mechanics and chemistry of batch and continuous pulping--both conventional and new modified processes, and to identify problem-solving techniques to achieve pulp quality and uniformity.

Participants will study how kraft pulping occurs in mill practice; interactions of wood, chemicals, heat, and mechanical variables on pulping results; comparison of new methods for kappa number measurement and digester control strategies; how to use mountains of mill process data to find interactions and solve problems; step-by-step analysis of changes in pulp properties during the pulping process; and options for preserving pulp strength potential.

The Kraft Pulping Short Course provides participants with a variety of activities and learning environments. Team exercises using an actual mill problem and typical mill data offer participants an opportunity to learn how other mill people solve problems while picking up tips that might prove valuable in their own mills. In addition, participants will tour the Stora-Enso North America mill in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

TAPPI Advanced Recycling Short Course

June 10-12, 2002 USDA Forest Products Lab Madison, Wisconsin 

This course will give participants deeper insight into one of the most problematic aspects of paper recycling--stickies. Course instructors will review various methods for measuring the concentration of stickies and provide guidelines for their removal and pacification. Students will become familiarized with advanced analysis of deinking plant processes. The course will also cover fiber savings and alternative uses of discards, including spaceboard from sludge and pulp extrusion of recovered paper and paper mill residuals, along with a survey of beneficial uses of rejects currently used by paper mills. Participants are encouraged to bring forward current mill problems for discussion. This short course is ideal tot superintendents, process engineers, supervisors, supplier technologists, R&D technologists, and quality control managers.

TAPPI and North Carolina State University present Hands-on Workshop for Pulp and Paper Basics

North Carolina State University and TAPPI will present the Hands on Workshop for Pulp and Paper Basics June 3-7, 2002, and October 14-18, 2002. This unique workshop will provide attendees an overall view of the basic concepts in pulp and paper manufacturing. Attendees will increase their understanding by participating in hands-on laboratory exercises.

This hands-on laboratory-based workshop will provide a broad overview of pulping, bleaching, chemical recovery, recycling, papermaking, and converting. The 5-day course will consist of presentations in the morning and hands on laboratory and pilot-plant exercises in the afternoon. Workshop material discussed in the morning will be re-emphasized in lab and pilot-plant exercises covering pulping, bleaching, deinking, papermaking, and refining for increased understanding and retention.
