Shoes for Iraqi children.

The guardsmen asked friends and family back in Missouri to donate unused shoes from their closets, but what they received instead were mostly new shoes bought on sale.

"People want to support how they can," Sgt. Carder told the News Tribune. "They want to see the good side of what we're doing over there."

Before they returned home, Operation Shoe Drop distributed more than 1,000 pairs of shoes to three Iraqi communities. To ensure that the distribution would not stop when they left, Lt. Wilde arranged for the guard company's replacement unit to continue the operation.

The soldiers are proud of the good they were able to do while deployed--not only the shoe drop, but also installing water purification It has been suggested that , , and be merged into this article or section.  systems, building schools, and distributing school supplies. "We're doing so many good things common people never see," Sgt. Carder said.

We salute all of our military personnel who have risen above the political quagmire in Iraq to demonstrate true humanitarian concern for those less fortunate than themselves.
