Shocking rocks.


Explorers in Central California's Sequoia National Park Sequoia National Park, 402,510 acres (162,960 hectares), E central Calif.; est. 1890. In the park are 35 groves of giant sequoias, spectacular granite mountains, and deep canyons.  have stumbled upon a crystal-filled cave that lay hidden from view for more than one million years.

 exist in the region, but this one is unique. "The caves [in the park] tend to have small passages," says Joel Despain, a geologist and the park's cave manager. "The passages in this cave are about 46 meters (150 feet) across with 23 m (75 ft)-high ceilings."

 than are normally seen in the park's caves. These rock formations form when mineral-rich water drips from the cave's ceiling. The mineral calcium carbonate calcium carbonate, CaCO3, white chemical compound that is the most common nonsiliceous mineral. It occurs in two crystal forms: calcite, which is hexagonal, and aragonite, which is rhombohedral.  crystallizes from the water, creating icicle-shaped deposits on the ceiling.

Scientists are now studying the cave to find out what caused its unusual conditions.
