Shiva's remote access client technology included in Microsoft Internet Explorer; Open Client Programming Interface enables remote access capabilities for Windows 3.x applications.

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1996--Shiva Corp. today announced that its remote access client technology will be included as part of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Microsoft's Web browser, which comes with Windows starting with Windows 98. Commonly called "IE," versions for Mac and Unix are also available. Internet Explorer is the most widely used Web browser on the market. It has also been the browser engine in AOL's Internet access software.  browser for Windows 3.x Windows 3.x can refer to either an individual or all of the following versions of Microsoft Windows:
  • Windows 3.0
  • Windows 3.1x
These should not be confused with the first three releases of Windows NT, which were also given "3.x" version numbers, i.e.

This extends Shiva's existing relationship with Microsoft and continues to deliver upon Shiva's strategy to proliferate the market with its open client technology and API (Application Programming Interface).

"Our 16-bit client implementation is a win-win situation for everyone," said Woody Benson, senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, Shiva Shiva or Siva (shē`və), one of the greatest gods of Hinduism, also called Mahadeva. The "horned god" and phallic worship of the Indus valley civilization may have been a prototype of Shiva worship or Shaivism.  Corporation. "Not only does it extend the reach of our client technology by providing Explorer users with the remote access functionality they need, it also enables independent software vendors to provide remote access capabilities for Windows 3.x applications."

Through Shiva's relationship with Microsoft, Shiva implemented a 16-bit client API based on Microsoft's 32-bit Remote Access Services (communications) Remote Access Services - (RAS) A service provided by Windows NT which allows most of the services which would be available on a network to be accessed over a modem link.  API. Microsoft is using Shiva's client technology and API to enable remote access capabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x.

Additionally, because the Shiva API is open it allows all independent software vendors (ISVs) to tightly integrate dial-in access with client/server applications and take advantage of any application's native user interface to manage and set up connection parameters by the user. This API has already been used by several vendors to provide remote access functionality in applications used by millions of people worldwide.
