Shenandoah Telecommunications Selects the Trident7 Optical Access Platform from Wave7 Optics for New FTTH Networks.

ATLANTA -- Wave7 Optics Inc., a leading supplier of fiber-to-the-home or -premises (FTTH/FTTP) equipment for residential and business services, today announced that Shenandoah Telecommunications (Shentel) will use Last Mile Link[TM] (LML) and Trident7[TM] Optical Access Platform network equipment for new FTTP (Fiber To The Premises) The installation of optical fiber from the carrier directly into the home or office. Also called "fiber to the home" (FTTH). See PON and FTTC. See also FTP.  networks.

Shentel [NSDQ NSDQ Night Stalkers Don't Quit (US Army 160th SOAR slogan) : SHEN], headquartered in Edinburg, Va., is an Independent Operating Company with approximately 25,000 subscribers in its "ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) A traditional local telephone company such as one of the Regional Bell companies (RBOCs). Contrast with CLEC. See ELEC and TELRIC. " region and 20,000 subscribers in various areas served through its "Converged Services" subsidiary operating in the mid-Atlantic states. Shentel serves a region growing rapidly due to a steady population influx from the neighboring Washington, DC - Baltimore corridor.

Shentel will initially deploy the Wave7 Optics equipment for fiber-fed subdivisions within its ILEC serving area to provide telephone service, television and high-speed Internet. Shentel anticipates bringing their first FTTH (Fiber To The Home) See FTTP.  customers online later this year.

"We issued a comprehensive technical RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services. It may provide a general or very detailed specification of the system.

and selected Wave7 because of numerous system advantages including compatibility with our existing technologies, total cost of ownership, and scalability as we grow," said Jeff Pompeo, Shentel's VP of Technology. "We believe the Trident7 will help us establish a clear edge over our competitors by providing deployment flexibility that works well in both our ILEC and CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  configurations and allows us to combine both RF and IP television to create a great variety of compelling service offerings. This is especially important as we see tremendous growth in new FTTH opportunities in our service area."

Leveraging their extensive fiber network, Shentel will deploy the Trident7 configured for EPON See PON.  (the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), also known as IEEE 802.3ah, is a collection of protocols specified in IEEE 802.3, defining the Ethernet in the Access networks, i.e. First/Last Mile.  standard) based services. The Trident7 is the industry's most advanced and flexible FTTP platform, as it delivers standards-based EPON and GPON See PON.  technologies in the same platform, which allows service providers to cost-effectively deliver a much broader array of services, as compared to other access network technologies.

"The Trident7 has a low initial capital outlay and is very much a apay as you grow' system, which is important for operators such as Shentel, who are experiencing rapid growth as the Washington, DC and Baltimore metro areas spread westward," said Emmanuel Vella, Chief Marketing Officer for Wave7 Optics. "Having a fiber rich infrastructure and FTTP equipment such as the Trident7 will enable Shentel to offer increasingly sophisticated services to their growing customer base."

Wave7 Optics is demonstrating the capabilities of its FTTP systems at this week's TelcoTV conference and exhibition in Dallas (November 6th - 8th), where visitors to booth 1403 can learn about optimum transport and delivery methods for IPTV, RF video, HDTV and other services to end-user customers.
