Shell Oil Announces Gift of $100,000 for Restoration of One of America's Greatest Works of Art.


HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1997--The Shell Oil Company Foundation is making a gift of $100,000 to the National Gallery of Art to assist in the conservation and installation of what many experts consider to be the greatest American sculpture of the nineteenth century, "Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw Robert Gould Shaw (October 10, 1837 – July 18, 1863) was the colonel in command of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which entered the American Civil War in 1863.  and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment."

The monumental sculpture, which is 15 feet high, 18 feet wide and three feet deep, will go on view September 21st at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., along with an exhibition of related studies. The memorial is on ten-year renewable loan to the Gallery from the National Park Service, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site: see National Parks and Monuments (table). , Cornish, New Hampshire Cornish is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. Created by the preeminent American sculptor of his time, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), the Shaw Memorial plaster relief portrays Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the valiant VALIANT Valsartan in Acute Myocardial Infarction Trial Cardiology A series of multinational M&M trials to determine the effects of valsartan–Diovan®  members of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, the first African-American combat infantry unit from the North to fight for the Union during the Civil War. The regiment was the subject of the 1989 Academy Award-winning film, "Glory," which starred Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is a two-time Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning American actor and director. He has garnered much critical acclaim for his portrayals of several real-life figures, such as Steve Biko, Malcolm X, Rubin "Hurricane" .

The Shaw Memorial took Saint-Gaudens 14 years to complete. It is considered by many experts to be the single greatest piece of sculpture produced in America during the nineteenth century. The plaster is also considered to be one of the nation's most important sculptural monuments to African-Americans and is the first memorial to black veterans.

Shell's underwriting for the Shaw Memorial is consistent with its ongoing support of the National Gallery of Art.
