Sheldon rakes in awards after strong football season.


Byline: The Register-Guard

Sheldon's Marty Johnson was named Class 4A football coach of the year by The Oregonian after leading the Irish to the state championship game. Johnson, who has coached the Irish for five seasons, was selected in a vote of the state's coaches.

The Irish had four players who were first-team all-state selections. Senior Zach Moran was a first-team pick at wide receiver and defensive back, and quarterback Alex Brink, kicker Luke Bellotti and linebacker Mike Proulx were also honored.

Oregon State running back Ken Simonton has accepted an invitation to play in the Hula Bowl all-star game on Feb. 2 in Hawaii.

Simonton, OSU's career leader in rushing and scoring, will be part of the West team led by OSU coach Dennis Erickson.

Baseball

Oregon State will hold three skills camps from Dec. 27-30 for players ages 8-18.

The All-Skills Camp will be on Dec. 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It will feature instruction in hitting, fielding, throwing, baserunning, pitching and catching. Cost of the camp is $60, and check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 27 at McAlexander Fieldhouse on the OSU campus.

The Hitting Camp will be held Dec. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will cover swing mechanics, count hitting, situational hitting, bunting and more. Cost is $75, and check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 29 at the fieldhouse.

The Pitching and Catching Camp will be Dec. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will include instruction on all aspects of pitching and catching. Cost is $75, and check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 30 at the fieldhouse.

Soccer

Oregon State's Aaron McHardy has been named to the men's scholar all-America first team, the school announced. McHardy, from Vancouver, B.C., has a 3.7 GPA, and he had 10 goals and three assists this season for the Beavers.
