Shearman & Sterling Assists World's Largest Non-Profit Mine-Clearing Organization; Lawyers Get First-Hand View of Explosives and Mine-Clearing Techniques.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2002

Shearman & Sterling announced today that the firm has agreed to provide pro bono Short for pro bono publico [Latin, For the public good]. The designation given to the free legal work done by an attorney for indigent clients and religious, charitable, and other nonprofit entities.  legal services to The HALO Trust, the organization that pioneered the concept of humanitarian mine clearance in Afghanistan in 1988.

This announcement was made in conjunction with ceremonies conducted around the world commemorating HALO's clearance of 1,000,000 landmines and UXO UXO Unexploded Ordnance

It is estimated that landmines kill 10,000 people every year and maim maim v. to inflict a serious bodily injury, including mutilation or any harm which limits the victim's ability to function physically. Work continues in Afghanistan where, in that country alone, there are more than 600,000 mines remaining to be destroyed. HALO is expanding its programs, and is in the process of assessing missions in several new areas.
