Thirteen-year-old Shayla longs for a relationship with her absentee One who has left, either temporarily or permanently, his or her domicile or usual place of residence or business. A person beyond the geographical borders of a state who has not authorized an agent to represent him or her in legal proceedings that may be commenced against him or her  father in this sequel to Williams' first novel, When Kambia Elaine Flew in From Neptune. Matters don't improve when he has yet another child, who is born on Shayla's birthday with eyes just like hers. It seems this baby, named Gift, will take Shayla's place, but it's a place she never really had. Eventually Shayla realizes that her life hasn't been as hard as the lives of her best friends Kambia and Lem.

Heather Alicia Simms recorded Williams' first book and seems right at home with this follow-up. Her voice is mellow mel·low
