Another in the Sharpe series, a popular character who has delighted adventure fans for 18 years. In this tale, Ensign Richard Sharpe leaves India to return to England and a new posting. He sails aboard the Calliope calliope, in music

Also traveling home are Lord Hale, a pompous man who wants to be prime minister some day soon, and his wife, Lady Hale, 20 years his junior. They loathe one another. Sharpe and Lady Hale fall in love. On the way home they join the British fleet under Nelson and defeat the French at the Battle of Trafalgar. Cornwell is a master of the battle scene, on land and at sea. He gets the historical details right, too. Severed limbs, tattered sails, the boom of cannon, and decks awash with blood are all vividly described.
