together a basically anti-Palestinian coalition to govern his country. His new partners are Shinui, a militantly secular centre-right party (15 seats), and the national Religious Party (NRP (Network Resource Planning) The planning, scheduling and control of a computer network. It includes documentation writing and network diagramming, analyses of traffic and congestion, analyses of application behavior and demand, procedures for failsafe and disaster ), which gained 6 seats in the recent election. The NRP, hard-nosed opponents of a Palestine state, attracts most of its support from among the settlers in Gaza and the West Bank. A second far-right party, the National Union (7 seats), has also joined the coalition; it, too, opposes a Palestinian state The Palestinian state (Arabic (دولة فلسطين) is a proposed country. The proposed location includes the Gaza Strip and the autonomously controlled areas of the West Bank, currently controlled by the Palestinian National .

The Labour Party with 19 seats, and the ultra-orthodox Shas party (11 seats), have been shut out of the coalition. Shas has fiercely critized the NRP for "betraying" the religious sector. In joining the coalition, the NRP must accept Sharon's agreement with Shinui to end legal privileges such as military service exemptions, presently held by ultra-orthodox Jews Jews [from Judah], traditionally, descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob, whose tribe, with that of his half brother Benjamin, made up the kingdom of Judah; historically, members of the worldwide community of adherents to Judaism. . The fact that Shinui leader Tommy Lapid will be the Justice Minister of the new government will ensure that this reform goes through.

The second-place party in the Knesset, Labour, favours a negotiated settlement with the Palestinians; consequently it simply could not join this coalition. One Labour spokesman observed that in view of Sharon's recruitment of NRP, he has "clearly selected a rightwing, extremist government that won't pursue a peace process." Labour was reduced to its lowest-ever number of parliamentary seats in the January 2003 election.

George Bush

Meanwhile, in a February 26,2003, speech in Washington, U.S. President George W. Bush set out the broad strategy underlying a war against Iraq. In response to critics accusing him of rushing into war, Mr. Bush said:

"Success in Iraq could begin a new stage for Middle Eastern peace and set in motion progress towards a truly democratic Palestinian state."

He then added, "The new government of Israel will be expected to support the creation of a viable Palestinian state."

. This will conflict with the views of the new Israeli coalition.

As recently as December 2002, Ariel Sharon spoke on the topic at the Herzliya Conference The Herzliya Conference, hosted by the Interdisciplinary Center at Herzliya, has become Israel's center stage for the articulation of national policy by its most prominent leaders including the Israeli President, the Prime Minister, the IDF Chief of General Staff, and the leading . There he gave tacit agreement to a Palestinian state when endorsing Mr. Bush's call for "a new Palestinian leadership uncompromised by terror" in advance of the new state being set up. But today the situation is different.

The elaborate conditions surrounding Sharon's present plans will not be acceptable to either the Palestinians or to the Quartet (Files from Globe, Star, Can. Jewish News).
